May 1, 2005 By: Bonnie Gibbs American SalonIn the new movie Beauty Shop, hair takes center stage alongside a star-studded cast that includes Queen Latifah, Alicia Silverstone, Mena Suvari, Kevin Bacon and Andie MacDowell. To create looks as diverse as the characters, head stylist Sterfon Demings pored over books, collaborated with the actors and found inspiration in the script. "Bille (Woodruff, the director) didn't put any restrictions on me," Demings says. "The freedom to do whatever I wanted was wonderful." Filming took place in California and Atlanta, where the city's unforgiving humidity was no match for Alabama-born Demings. "We just didn't do a lot of curly stuff," he says with a laugh. Instead, he relied on products from KE9rastase, Redken, Phyto, Paul Mitchell, Sebastian, Bed Head and a new discovery, Pure Hair, which gave texture and movement to the European bob Bacon's character wears. Because Beauty Shop takes place in a salon, Deming says it was like being with family and friends. "We had a ball," he says. "I hope everybody is happy with the finished product." Spoken like a true professional.
