Runway-Ready Style

Joico has just launched three additions to its innovative Design Collection: Flexible Shaping Spray, which delivers medium, touchable hold without flaking or stickiness; Texture Spray, which produces a beach-blown look; and Forming Polish, which provides flexible definition and high shine to shorter hairstyles. "Design Collection is perfect for people who want to recreate the hairstyles celebs and models are wearing on the red carpet and runway," says Damien Carney, Joico's international artistic director. joico.com —L.A.

HOLLYWOOD LAND

Tom Julian, president of the brand consultancy firm the Tom Julian Group, checks out The Americana at Brand.

With its outdoor setting incorporating parks, fountains, a town square, pedestrian walkways and even a trolley car, The Americana at Brand is the newest West Coast destination for a unique shopping experience. Some liken it to The Grove at Farmer's Market—no surprise, since it shares the same developer, Rick Caruso of Caruso Affiliated.

In addition to shopping attractions, the 15.5-acre site in Glendale, CA, is home to The Residences—more than 230 lofts and townhouses and resort-style swimming pools and fitness centers. One key attraction is The Grand Lobby, which feels like a hotel lobby but is set in an indoor/outdoor corridor. The concierge housed here supports shoppers with everything from loyalty-rewards programs to foreign-language assistance. The Americana also boasts an events calendar that reads more like a cultural guide to arts and entertainment than a mall promotional posting, with contemporary activities like Sunday morning yoga classes on the park lawn with Lululemon Athletica, jazz singers in the park on Friday nights and movies shown at Pacific Theatres, which operates 18 movie screens.

Here, some of the must-browse shopping destinations:

Barneys New York CO-OP is Barneys' edgier concept, now with multiple locations around Los Angeles. This outpost carries DVF, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Marc by Marc Jacobs for women, plus Paul Smith and Helmut Lang for men, in a loftlike environment.

XXI, aka Forever 21, offers color-coordinated separates with graphic prints. Men have their own department in the multilevel store, and competitive prices continue to entice shoppers of all ages.

New brands from familiar operators include Free People by Urban Outfitters, offering vintage-chic looks in an all-American setting; Ruehl from Abercrombie & Fitch, a townhouse concept from New York City's Greenwich Village selling signature logo apparel and accessories for him and her; and Martin + Osa from American Eagle, which is targeted to those over 28 and designed to be authentic and adventurous. Soon-to-open is Gilly Hicks, a lingerie destination also from Urban Outfitters.

International operators include Spain's Custo Barcelona; Sweden's H&M; Russia's 16-year-old fashion flavor of the moment, Kira Plastinina, who plans to open more than 30 stores in the United States this year; Australia's Peter Alexander; and Giorgio Armani's A/X Armani Exchange. Beauty players include The Art of Shaving, Kiehl's, Bare Escentuals and Bokaos Aveda Lifestyle Salon.
