Bright Idea

KACIE HENGLER, a stylist at The Doves Studio in Santa Monica, CA, had trouble acquiring hair models for her training at The Doves Academy this past year, so she posted an ad on craigslist.org, a classified ads Web site, asking for people interested in discounted haircuts and color treatments. The web-savvy stylist paid $25 to post the ad in the "TV/film/video/radio" jobs section rather than under "services" because she knew the listing would attract a larger audience there. Before Hengler knew it, she had 150 responses, a feat that not only impressed her instructors, but also attracted new clients. "By the time you're hitting the floor, you're not starting from scratch," Hengler says. "Now I'm always booked with people who I had as models, but came back as clients." —A.F.
