David Bickle, owner of The David Salon in Costa Mesa, CA, knows firsthand that owning a successful salon is a journey, and that the learning process never ends. Over the years, he's doubled the size of his business, expanded his menu to include spa services, and remodeled the reception and retail areas so they're more conducive to a pleasing shopping experience. "In just two years, we doubled our retail sales, which isn't a bad investment," he says.
Recently, Bickle further enhanced his salon's interior with Venetian tile, natural stone and marble, incandescent lighting, and mahogany furniture, fixtures and styling stations. He also added a spacious color bar and became a certified HeadMapping salon. The HeadMapping system, developed by Walter Claudio, maps out exactly how much time, product and cost are required to perform each service. Bickle's stylists can now dispense the appropriate amount of haircolor for the specific hair type and technique used. In addition to minimizing waste, the system helps Bickle to clearly define the price for color services.
"To be successful, one has to evolve and make room for improvement," Bickle says. "We're pleased with the salon's most recent transformation, which is an Old World look with a Mediterranean flair, as well as a color bar that makes the best use of the space and makes us more efficient, even on our busiest days." —K.D.
