Don't Fade Away

July 1, 2009 By: Lotus Abrams American Salon

Color-care products can help clients keep their haircolor vibrant and healthy—plus protect their investment.

Exposure to UV rays and harsh cleansers can take a toll on haircolor, causing it to fade and resulting in dry and damaged strands. With clients becoming increasingly cost-conscious during the economic downturn, it's more important than ever to recommend products for color-treated hair that increase the life of color services.

Hair Color

"Maintaining healthy hair is the best strategy for preventing color fade," says Marianne Knutson, Aveda executive director, haircare and makeup. "Damaged hair does not hold dye molecules as well as healthy hair, and is more susceptible to the harmful effects of exposure to water, UV light and cleansing agents." Aveda's Color Conserve and Sun Care lines contain UV filters that are naturally derived from wintergreen and cinnamon bark oils, plus botanical extracts that moisturize and strengthen color-treated hair.

Sulfates, the harsh detergents found in many shampoos, can also cause haircolor to fade, says Wendy Belanger, artistic director for Pureology. The sulfate-free brand caters to color-treated hair with different needs, such as volume, hydration and smoothing. "By removing harsh detergents from the shampooing process, this ensures that the only thing you are doing is cleansing your hair of daily dirt and oil and not affecting your color," she says.
