Chris and Sonya Dove Choose Trip of a Lifetime Winner
Industry icons Chris and Sonya Dove have chosen Florida salon owner David Jenkins as the winner of their Trip of a Lifetime contest, which includes a complimentary course at their Santa Monica, CA, salon. Jenkins was nominated by his wife, Karin. "The basis of the Trip of a Lifetime was to recognize a hairdresser who not only stands out as an inspiration to fellow peers, but also shines due to his or her selfless and relentless efforts in giving back to the community," said the Doves. Jenkins, a licensed hairdresser since 1991 who owns Applause Salon in New Smyrna Beach, FL, spends much of his time helping various charitable organizations and instilling his values and work ethics into his 23-year-old hairdresser son. Twelve years ago, Jenkins created an annual holiday charity ball that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels and scholarships for local high school students. He's also a certified volunteer for Look Good . . . Feel Better, which helps individuals with cancer look good, improve their self-esteem, and manage their treatment and recovery with greater confidence, and has organized various fundraisers at Applause that donate 100 percent of proceeds to causes such as AIDS and breast cancer awareness, the Humane Society and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

His work with clients who have cancer is especially meaningful to him. "Many times I have witnessed his love and care for his clients who are going through chemotherapy and come to him to have their hair cut or shaved off," Karin said. "He has a gift of making them feel more beautiful than ever when he's through, and they leave feeling positive and uplifted about their future." Karin also noted that Jenkins volunteers at the local Little Theater to help with actors' hair or wigs for shows.
In addition to the course at the Doves' Santa Monica studio, Jenkins will receive a weekend getaway in Santa Monica, complete with round-trip airfare, a two-night stay and spa treatment at the luxurious Shutters on the Beach hotel and a fashion image consultation. —L.M.
