Oribe Hosts a Stellar Education Event
Legendary hairstylist Oribe and his education team hosted Backstage 2009, a two-day event held in New York City in August exclusively for member salons in the Oribe Hair Care Network. More than 150 of the top salon owners in the country and their artistic directors attended. The educational event took place in a 10,000-square-foot photo studio at Chelsea Piers, where Oribe shared his editorial secrets for creating the hairstyles seen in some of the most iconic photographs of our time—from classic Vogue cover looks to Avedon portraits. The second day took a different turn. Salon owners worked together on topics ranging from culture to philanthropy to business. Meanwhile, artistic directors worked with models throughout the day in a series of hands-on sessions focusing on their creativity and providing exposure to new tools and new ways of thinking about hairstyling. Think of it as a hair jam in the truest sense of the word—hundreds of stylists and models, hair dryers blowing, music blaring. Armed with sketchbooks, wigs, wefts, accessories and styling products, artistic directors turned out looks that were runway-ready, while fashion photographer Carlos Ruiz took final portraits. What's more, the entire event was filmed by Bodega Pictures for a documentary. The grand finale? A party for attendees, fashion industry insiders and press. —MARIANNE DOUGHERTY
