NICK ARROJO, owner of Arrojo Studio in Manhattan and stylist on TLC's What Not to Wear, keeps his staff motivated by running regular competitions. The ongoing priority-booking list contest rewards stylists who get five booking requests from new clients or who sold more than $20 in retail products the previous week. Stylists on the list are given priority when new clients call the salon to make an appointment. Arrojo, who won a Global Salon Business Award and spoke at Neill Corporation's Serious Business 2008 conference in New Orleans, also recently gave away an Apple iPhone to the hairdresser who sold the most products during a three-week period. "Hairdressers don't like to sell retail," Arrojo says, "but if they're really focused, it's amazing what they can accomplish." —L.A.
