Since opening in April 2003, Matthew Michael's Salon & Spa in Orlando has become the fastest-growing Aveda salon in Central Florida. From design to community outreach, the salon strives to be as green as possible. The walls were constructed with wheat fiberboard and recycled cardboard, the flooring was organically stained, countertops were made from recycled Aveda products, and the event table in the retail area was made of reclaimed wood stained with Aveda haircolor. Matthew Michael's also utilizes energy-efficient lightbulbs and high-efficiency washers and dryers. The owners also print a quarterly newsletter that includes at least one article addressing issues like global warming. What's more, they attend Sierra Club meetings so they can learn about any issues that might impact the community. Last year the salon, which raised $12,000 for the Gulf Restoration Network, was named Earth Month Champion in Central Florida.
